Serge THOMANN (1982)

Appointments - Councillor for French expatriates in Australia, Fiji and PNG

Serge Thomann (class of 1982) was elected Conseiller des Français de l'étranger for Australia, Fiji and PNG following the consular elections held last May.

The mission of the Conseillers des Français de l'étranger (former consular councillors) is to be the local elected representatives who know, support and represent French people abroad. who know, support and represent French citizens living abroad in French embassies and consulates. They are elected by direct universal suffrage by the French people in their country/constituency for a 6-year term.

Conseillers des Français de l'étranger represent the French people in their constituency, not France (like Ambassadors and Consuls).

Extract from an interview with Serge in petitjournal.com: the local and international news magazine for French expatriates. A glimpse into the life of Serge, an Alsatian from Colmar, sent to Australia by L'Oréal, who became a photographer to the stars after meeting the singer of INXS.second Frenchman to be elected Municipal Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the city of Port Phillip in Melbourne (population 110,000).

"I was born in Colmar, France, to a father who was a nurse, local councillor and trade unionist, and a mother who was a housewife. I graduated from ESSCA, came to Australia for L'Oréal in 1983, met INXS singer Michael Hutchence in 1985, who launched my career as a photographer, much sought-after by many artists in Australia and abroad. by many artists in Australia and around the world (including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Charlotte Rampling, Claudia Schiffer, John Farnham, Kylie Minogue, Hugh Jackman, etc.). I became a militant activist in 2007 in St Kilda against the construction of a huge shopping mall, which I stopped in 2009 after being elected City Councillor for the City of Port Phillip. Re-elected then Deputy Mayor for 3 years, I saved the local theater, Le Palais. Still deeply involved in the French community, I'm President of French Assist Melbourne, bringing my help and extensive network to French associations, French people living in Australia and French people passing through. Delegate of the Union Internationale des Alsaciens in Australia for many years. And today head of the independent list "Ensemble maintenant! Écouter, Comprendre, Agir." I am honored to have been named Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite in 2019."
