Arthur de Jerphanion (ESSCA 2013) is the co-founder of Tandem, which promotes soft mobility in companies with company bicycles. To mark World Bicycle Day, the ESSCA ALUMNI Transition team asked him a few questions.
Why and how did you get involved in the transition?
As I embarked on my entrepreneurial career, it was an absolute necessity for me to set up a project with an impact. When I saw that 8 million French people took their car every morning for a journey of less than 10km, I said to myself that it was high time to make cycling a mass means of transport again!
What do you do and how does your activity impact the world?
Tandem is tackling the biggest source of CO2 emissions in France: the transport sector, which accounts for 32% of emissions, half of which come from our personal cars. So, contrary to what we sometimes hear, our personal impact can have a huge impact on our emissions!
How do you imagine tomorrow's world?
I can only imagine it being less dependent on the car for our daily journeys. Today, cars take up 50% of public space in our streets, parking lots and parking spaces. I'd like to be able to break down the mental barriers that exist for millions of French people who use their cars more out of habit than out of absolute necessity.
What message would you like to pass on to the ESSCA community?
Get involved in positive-impact projects. Whether as an entrepreneur, employee or member of an association, it's high time we took a stand on these issues and became agents of change! Schools must be able to set an example in these matters :)
